Solopreneur Summertime Sadness

Summer puts solopreneurship into stark relief. You want to enjoy some well-earned vacation, be present with your kids and keep up with work, while your clients and prospects balance their schedules.

I would like to tell you that I have it all figured out, that I’m having deep conversations with my kids who got back from school recently (and never fight), that I’m in perfect shape (like those AI images of gray-haired Olympians who have money for trainers but not shirts that keep popping up in my LinkedIn feed), that my wife and I enjoy a nice home-cooked meal every night, and that I’m crushing all my work objectives ahead of schedule. (“And for only $999, you too can enjoy the drugs that make me believe all this!”)

Even if I was doing all these things, my clients and partners and prospects are having their own vacations, their own “ooops, camp only goes from 10-3 this week” moments, so things get more challenging.

But they don’t have to be impossible. Make follow-up as easy as you can, so you don’t have to spend a lot of time and energy thinking about who you need to follow up with next, and you can just follow-up, even a little bit at a time. (And do make sure your website is doing some lead generation for you.)

Thank you for coming to my TED talk, and if you want more details, join me for office hours next Thursday at noon CT.
