Uncommon Insight

Many companies suffer from broad "scatter" in their pricing. Reducing the spread of pricing for companies that have not earned special discounts is an important area of opportunity for pricing people. This chart illustrates that while the company has significant scatter, the problem is much worse in the indirect channel, helping the company focus its efforts on the right business segment.

Another way to look at the spread of prices across different segments is with a price band chart. This example shows that Bronze and Gold customers often get better discounts, resulting in lower list price yields, than Strategic and Premier accounts.

Pricing and product managers put a lot of effort into list price adjustments. However, downstream adjustments can often negate list price changes. This chart illustrates the relationship between the change in list price and the change in true price for a set of products. Where there is strong correlation between list price changes and true price realization, pricing efforts should focus on list price. Where there is little correlation, or even negative correlation, pricers should focus on the downstream adjustments first.
